อุตสาหกรรมยานยนต์และอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ถือว่าเป็นหนึ่งในอุตสาหกรรมหลักที่ขับเคลื่อนเศรษฐกิจมากกว่า 5 ทศวรรษ ซึ่งถือว่าประเทศไทยเป็นฐานการผลิตของโลก แต่อย่างไรก็ดีด้วยสภาวะการเปลี่ยนแปลงและการแข่งขันทางเทคโนโลยีที่รุนแรง จึงมีความจำเป็นที่ประเทศไทยต้องมีการเตรียมพร้อมรับมือกับสถานการณ์ที่จะเกิดขึ้น เพื่อที่จะสามารถปรับตัวและพัฒนาตัวเองขึ้นมาให้ทันต่อสภาวะที่ท้าทายมากขึ้นและเพื่อรักษาให้ประเทศไทยเป็นฐานการผลิตยานยนต์และอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ของโลกอย่างต่อเนื่องและยั่งยืนดังนั้นภาครัฐโดยคณะรัฐมนตรีมีมติเห็นชอบให้กำหนด 10 อุตสาหกรรมเป้าหมาย ให้เป็นกลไกขับเคลื่อนเศรษฐกิจเพื่ออนาคต (New Engine of Growth) โดยมีอุตสาหกรรมยานยนต์สมัยใหม่ (Next Generation Automotive) และอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์อัจฉริยะ (Smart Electronics) เป็น 2 ใน 10 อุตสาหกรรมเป้าหมายที่จะมีส่วนช่วยในการขับเคลื่อนและพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจของประเทศไทยให้ประเทศสามารถหลุดพ้นจากประเทศที่มีรายได้ปานกลางไปสู่ประเทศที่มีรายได้สูง โดยการดำเนินงานวิจัยในช่วง 9 เดือนที่ผ่านมา เพื่อสนับสนุนงานวิจัยและพัฒนาเพื่อสร้างความแข็งแรงและสร้างมูลค่าในอุตสาหกรรมยานยนต์ และอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ เพื่อรองรับการเติบโตและการก้าวผ่านเทคโนโลยีไปสู่อุตสาหกรรมยุคใหม่ เพื่อยกระดับเศรษฐกิจของประเทศ โดยเน้นการวิจัยและพัฒนาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเทคโนโลยีอัจฉริยะ การวิจัยและพัฒนาเพื่อรองรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงเข้าสู่สังคมผู้สูงอายุและเทคโนโลยีเพื่อสุขภาพและความปลอดภัย การวิจัยและพัฒนาที่ตอบสนองนโยบายพลังงานของประเทศ และเป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม เพื่อสร้างเครือข่ายความร่วมมือกับภาครัฐ ภาคการศึกษา และภาคเอกชน และกำหนดทิศทางกรอบการวิจัยและพัฒนาร่วมกัน โดยเน้นการหารือโดยตรงและเจาะจงตามกลุ่มเป้าหมาย โดยอาศัยการขับเคลื่อนหลักจากสำนักงานประสานฯ<br><br>The automotive and electronics industry is considered one of the main industries that have driven the economy for more than 5 decades, which considers Thailand to be the worlds manufacturing base.
